The game of Electronic Poker starts when the bettor puts credits (either tokens, tickets or money) into the machine and pushes the play button. A five card hand will be "handed out" on the screen.

For the cards the enthusiast wishes to keep, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they want, from all to none.

After the bettor has chosen which cards he would like to keep, they should press ‘draw’, at which point any new cards are needed they will be dealt. The hand is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine analyzing the hand to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the payout schedule.

A list of common winning hands begins with jacks or better, and moves on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, 4 of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the payout schedule can range from machine to machine, so that experienced gamblers are agile enough to pick the most beneficial machine each time.

As soon as the first round has finished, the player can either decide to continue on in an attempt to increase their winnings, or they can press the ‘collect’ button to cash out any money that they may have won. Further, a few versions of the game allow the gambler a chance to double their wins, in which instance a further round is played. There are also differences among specific games, with some virtual decks having wild cards and other varying characteristics to enhance playability.
