Video Poker is a beloved game that can be gambled on in casinos throughout the world, or in your house on your personal computer, through an Internet connection. The game rules are very simple and involve the player attempting to achieve the best combination of cards achievable in order to win cash. In this respect it is much the same as a normal game of poker, without the interaction with any other players. Of course, techniques used in a physical game of poker, such as bluffing, will be useless here.

The game of Video Poker begins when the gambler puts credits (either tokens, tickets or money) into the video poker machine and pushes the draw button. A hand of five cards will be "distributed" on the video screen.

The Electronic Poker machine also has buttons with ‘hold’ printed on them, and enthusiasts will need to now choose which cards to hold and which to discard. For the cards the gambler would like to retain, the ‘hold’ buttons must be pressed so that they illuminate. The player can choose to keep any number of cards they wish, whether it is all or none.

After the enthusiast has selected which cards he wishes to keep, they should press ‘draw’, which will mean that any new cards are needed they will be given out. The hand is now completed, with the Electronic Poker machine scanning the hand to see if it matches any of the winning hands printed on the pay out schedule.

Generally, the lowest succeeding hand on a Video Poker machine is a pair of jacks with the award money increasing for each better hand. A common list of winning hands starts with jacks or better, moving on to 2 pairs, three of a kinds, straights, flushes, full houses, four of a kinds, straight flushes and last but not least royal flushes. It is obvious that the pay out schedule can vary from machine to machine, so that knowledgeable bettors are able to select the most beneficial ones each instance.

Once the initial round has played out, the player can either choose to stay on and try to to increase their earnings, or press the ‘collect’ button to retrieve any cash that might have been won. Further, a few versions of the game allow the player a chance to double their winnings, in which situation a further game is played. There are also differences among individual machines, with some decks of cards having wild cards and other varying elements to enhance playability.
